When There’s No Drawing — How We Reverse-Engineer Cylinders From Scratch

A damaged cylinder arrives with no OEM drawing, no specification sheet, and no manufacturer support. Here’s how our in-house engineering team rebuilds it from first principles.

One of the most common challenges plant engineers face isn’t just a damaged cylinder—it’s a damaged cylinder with no drawings, no specifications, and no replacement support. Imported equipment, aging machinery, or obsolete OEM products often leave maintenance teams with no reliable source for replacement components.

This is where RAX’s in-house design and engineering capability makes the difference between rapid recovery and prolonged plant downtime. Our engineering team does not depend on OEM drawings to begin the rebuilding process. Using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Autodesk Inventor, we accurately determine bore diameter, piston rod size, stroke length, working pressure, test pressure, seal groove dimensions, and complete cylinder geometry directly from the damaged component.

The process begins with precise measurement of every critical dimension, including bore diameter, rod OD, mounting arrangement, port configuration, and overall assembly dimensions. Based on these measurements, our engineers perform ISO/DIN standard engineering calculations to establish safety factors, cushioning requirements, body construction, and mounting configurations—whether the original cylinder is tie-rod, welded, trunnion-mounted, or custom designed.

This is more than conventional reverse engineering. It is a complete parametric redesign, supported by 3D CAD modelling, engineering validation, and stress analysis (where required). The result is an OEM-quality replacement cylinder that delivers equivalent or improved performance, without relying on manufacturers that may be unavailable, discontinued, or unwilling to share technical drawings.

Our reverse-engineering expertise has been successfully applied to steel plant equipment, furnace hydraulics, heavy industrial machinery, and specialized material handling systems such as Kamag equipment. Every rebuilt cylinder is designed, manufactured, assembled, and performance-tested entirely in-house, ensuring quality, reliability, and shorter lead times.
